McSweeney's
I went to hear Dave Eggers speak a few weeks ago and it was like a rock concert. People were lined up on the rainy sidewalk an hour before the doors opened at the medium sized theater. People were excited and wearing the kinds of silly trending clothes that you would not wear to work. David Eggers became a icon for speaking frankly and occasionally acting like child when he released his memoirs
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius some years ago. He is neither unattractive nor off-putting. He is even genuinely entertaining and inspiring. The creative 20-somethings should not be blamed for liking him. After publishing AHWOSG, Mr. Eggers started a quarterly literary endeavor by the name of McSweeney's. It is delightful and their website is updated daily with new short fiction and other such writings.
826 Valencia
Also the child of Dave Eggers, and housed inside the McSweeney's San Francisco office (there is also one in New York), 826 Valencia aims to get kids 8-18 writing and creating. Both of my siblings, being under 18, have taken classes here and schools in the area are also invited to come in for workshops. The name is of course the physical address of the program and is also a pirate store. Not that there are many pirate stores these days to compare with, but it should be said that this is a superior one. There are various drawers to explore, aquariums to watch, telescopes to eye and mops that fall on your head if you stand in just the right place (this is called 'getting mopped').
Monkey King
This is beautiful site with watercolors detailing the early story to the great Chinese epic, The Monkey King.
Muffin Films
Graduating from the UCLA school of animation, Amy Winfrey created this site as her senior thesis. You'll find 12 highly amusing films about muffins as well as two other series by Amy if you click on "About Muffin Films".
Home Star Runner
This is one of those cult hits. I guess they make their money off of tee-shirts and bumper stickers, because Home Star Runner is otherwise a commercial free, beautifully crafted site filled with movies, games and a poopsmith. Hours of time wasting fun.
Zhongwen.com
This is an amazing resource on the Chinese language. If you have any interest at all, check it out.
Exploding Dog
Sam Brown draws pictures based on titles that people send him. This is amusing and different in a lovely way. Be sure to check out the recent work, "The Moon is yelling at me".
