Reting monastery is where the Dalai Lama has indicated he wishes to return if he comes back to Tibet. The monks there know this and one blessed our copy of the Lonely Planet after finding an image of the Dalai Lama inside.

We met these nuns as we hiked the trail to their nunnery, above Reting.

Long hair, braided with a red sash, is common in the west of Tibet. A heavy jacket is usually worn that can be stripped down to the waist.

Most Chinese buses are water cooled and as this mini-bus pulled off the road to refill at the bog in the distance, it's wheels became stuck in the marsh. Several vehicles, including ours, stopped to pull it out.

Most of the pilgrims here were from rural Tibet and drove to Tashi Dor (a large rock in the middle of this inland lake) in their massive blue trucks decked out with colorful flags.

With prayer flags bobbing in the water and tiny paper cards, printed with scripture, scattering through the air, these religious articles would be litter anywhere else.

While sitting in a open plain, this man passed us and asked us in Chinese if we wanted to go for a horse ride. The mountains in the background are around 7,000 meters (23,000 ft).

Our driver, Lampso, was a very religious man who would start each day's drive with a dash of barley seed across the dashboard and an hour of swiftly mumbled prayers.
